A typical daughter of a Gujrati immigrant parents in the USA, works in the house-keeping department of a hotel cleaning guest rooms and toilets. She works hard and saves money to buy a house of her own because as most girls in USA she has developed this desire to be independent. She has an argument with her father and walks out of his house relying on a friend to give her shelter. This girl friend takes her to Las Vegas, the gambling mecca of USA.
In Las Vegas, she wins $2000 on a gambling table and so cannot believe her luck!! Greed, however, takes over and she dreams of winning much more in order to add to her savings for buying a house!! So blinded by the initial euphoria, she continues to bet and loses all of her savings soon. With nothing left to bet, she is in tears and is distraught and calls the Casino people 'thieves and chors' for stealing her savings. She still has not realized that the whole thing was a setup and that the initial $2000 win was to lure her into betting more!
A tough looking black man pulls her away from the betting table by her coat collar. In her innocence, she calls that black man a very good person, when he hands her $32000 more to bet. That man is a loan shark and a goon and beats the frail girl after she loses that money as well. With a gun hanging from his belt, he demands that she return $50000 within 20 days. With nothing left of her savings, the girl devises a plan to rob banks. The TV stations report that a 'pink bandit' has been robbing banks at gun point. After returning the loan she then turns herself over to the police...but far from the Indian neighborhood where her parents reside!!
The movie ends with her sympathetic parents visiting her in jail. She is just a lonely frail girl. This is not a typical romantic hollywood crime caper with loud music and big stars. There are romantic pauses in the film. The movie otherwise seems quite real, except for the part where she so 'easily' robs banks!! The movie takes you thru the entire cycle of financial compulsions that immigrants face and the temptations that hang like carrots in front of their eyes!
At times, the entire USA seems like one big gambling den. There are many ways one can lose money!
Kangana Ranaut, the actress who plays the immigrant girl has taken a shapelier turn in Bollywood.
